5:13 pm - When I rule the world
  • Sweets shall be banned from cinemas, in fact anything with a wrapper and / or that makes a rustling sound shall be banned. Offendors shall be beat around the face with a large trout.

  • Any child under the age of thirteen must be restrained with a leash by a responsible "takes no shit" adult. And no crying during parts they're obviously too young to be watching. Chloroform will be dispensed otherwise.

  • Films will start at the time specified. If you want to sit rhough 25 minutes of ads and trailers be my guest, but they'll start before the given time.

  • I'm sure I'll have some other reforms to put into action too, but these are at the top of the list.

11:10 pm - My wife and I had twenty five glorious years, then we met
Haven't mentioned this yet but two of my cousins in Canada are both getting married next year. As it stands at the moment (and this has already changed more than a handful of times) they'll be on consecutive weekends which luckily means only one flight. Anyway, for the one that's booked for the first weekend in August, my brother and I have been asked to be part of my cousin's wedding party. From what I can gather this is basically groosmen as there'll be six of us up there with him throughout the day doing this, that and the other.

It's honestly really flattering to be asked, but the one part that worries me is something he mentioned about being the first to dance. Wtf? There is no way I'm getting on that dancefloor in front of everyone and dancing with some random bridesmaid, no fucking way. I have a feeling the bar will be very inviting at that time. But apart from that, sounds like fun.

11:08 pm - We always did feel the same, we just saw it from a different point of view
I don't usually listen to cover versions more than a couple of times, but I completely adore this one of KT Tunstall covering Bob Dylan:

A bunch of us are heading up to Mablethorpe on Friday for the bank holiday weekend. Happy days ^_^

12:22 pm - Lily had two queens, she was hopin' for a third to match her pair
People in warmer countries may scoff but we've had an excellent week since the start of last weekend weather-wise; it's been hitting up to 25 degrees outside! So naturally we've been making the most of it in case the sun starts to hide behind dirty rain clouds again with BBQs every weekend. Huzzah! If things stay this sunny in a couple of weeks time our trip to Mablethorpe (seaside town) will be rad.

In case anyone was wondering my car insurance dilemma finally got sorted and I've paid the price I originally was quoted for online, which is something I guess.

I've also decided that the Back to the Future theme tune is my favourite film music ever.

4:05 pm - Why can't you do things the easy way for a change City?
Oh my God, that was one of the longest ten minutes I've ever experienced. Coventy have just managed to stay up despite losing 4 fucking 1 thanks to Leicester not managing to break a 0-0 deadlock. I'm completely wrung out after that.

7:28 pm - Ah crivens!!
Direct Line are a bunch of incompetant, retarded monkeys. No wait, at least you can train monkeys. Seriously, their level of customer service is summed up in the first four letters of their name. I renewed my car insurance with them for the 3rd or 4th year a couple of weeks ago and yesterday I received a notice from them that my new policy has been cancelled, refunded and they've instead automatically renewed my insurance with them at a higher price. I'm not a happy bunny.

I am glad to be reading Discworld again. I have a feeling that until recenrly I hadn't read any since late 2006 and the last new book I read for sure was Thud! But now I'm catching up with the Tiffany Aching series (The Wee Free Men = sub-par, A Hatful of Sky = enjoyably goofy, Wintersmith = about to crack open) and have Making Money somewhere in the house for afterwards.

Went to see The Orphanage on Tuesday and it was so much fun to have people actually shriek during the film. Now I'm a complete wuss in horrors / thrillers and jump at any sudden loud NOIses but at least I don't scream :p

Sport isn't something that often gets mentioned in this here journal of mine but it's the end of the English football season over the next couple of weekends and once again Coventry City are in danger of relegation at the last game of the season. And I really don't know how things are going to wind up, as mathematically nothing less than a win will guarantee us safety. Luckily there are three teams below us also in trouble but any one of us could be in for the drop depending on the final results. If the last two weekends have been anything to go by it's going to go right down to the final whistle, whatever the half time scores.

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is on TV tomorrow, hurray!

8:33 pm - Mostly music
I'm not sure what the reason is but over the past... six or seven months the range of music I listen to has grown the most since I first logged on to this wonderful Internet and found out you can download it all for free! Nothing majorly off the wall or underground but I've finally discovered the joys of David Bowie and Bob Dylan, as well as heaps of other bands I wouldn't have found out about if it weren't for forums, etc. Need to find a new place to store all of these CDs soon. Although it's weird that while I'm listening to loads more I'm going to far less gigs (one so far this year that was very meh and no others on the horizon). Ah well. This Desert Island Discs tourney on Interference is ace too.

Heaven knows what the weather will be like, but I'm happy that the clocks have changed and summer isn't far away. Can't wait to hit the beer gardens again, there's nothing like lounging on the grass with your mates, drink in hand. But even if there's not much of an improvement on last summer there's still a week in Greece to look forward to. Happy days :)

Also, Anita is likely to be spending the best part of a year over here starting in September while she does a year of uni at Birmingham, so that's totally brilliant. We need to look at sorting out a place to live. Well I do anyway, she's looking at apartments every day lol.

6:40 pm - I kiss you, you're beautiful, I want you to walk
So Australia was fantastic as I suppose it always has been and always will be. Anita and I went to Queensland where we went to a wildlife park, jaw dropping beaches and snorkelled / scuba dived at the Great Barrier Reef. GBR was amazing by the way, the second time we went scuba diving was after dark and it was pitch black down there; you couldn't even see your hand in front of your face without shining a torch on it first. Saw a sleeping sea turtle, then sharks, stingrays and NEMO the other times. We also went to an outdoor cinema where they showed You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle but that was more her idea.

Also went to Melbourne and met up with Siggy. Saw more wildlife (i.e. loads of wallabies and kangeroos) and also little penguins the size of seagulls emerge from the water at dusk. That was really cool.

Aside from that we tried to make the most of the three weeks. Hung out with her friends a few times, celebrated her 21st birthday and seemed to go to the mall way more than was necessary. Australia rules.

More recently I went to see Arcade Fire play in Manchester at the weekend. We all agreed afterwards they were one of the best live bands we've ever seen. Exhilierating and on top form from start to finish, they were just brilliant.

Setlist )

Regina stole the show, when she didn't have anything specific to do she was working the crowd up (like we needed it!) but I lost sight of her after In The Backseat finished. Realised a couple of songs later she was behind the kit drumming! She really did love the limelight. And it's the only gig I've ever been to where the crowd were still singing out on the street ten minutes later.

Finally, managed to get Foo Fighters tickets for Tuesday AT LAST (late allocation from the box office) and Powderfinger are next month. Oh joy.

9:11 am - Because I was really rushed a few days ago
I completely forgot to mention that I'd be going to Australia on Thursday. Landed here Saturday morning at 6.10 and it's been great so far, if a little tiring the first day. Planned so far is Snow Patrol Friday night, Queensland next week, Anita's 21st on the 14th then Melbourne a couple of days afterwards. I'll be home on the 22nd so until then at least I have a reason for not updating <.< >.>

8:28 pm
Well, after ploughing through it all day on Saturday and re-reading a few choice sections, here're my thoughts on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

And they're spoilerific )

Also, I saw the new film last night. Happy to say I thought it was great, definitely up there with Prisoner of Azkaban in my personal list and much better than the slightly disappointing Goblet of Fire. While these last two both had to cut loads out and maintain a breakneck pace, this one had the advatage of not being constricted to showcase three trials / set pieces at regular intervals and had the book that was most in need of a trimming anyway. The montage scenes for the DA worked a treat and, althought a tad overused, the newspaper headlines moved the plot along briskly.

Pros - more of Snape and the twins than previously / basically more humour, some nifty camerawork, good groundwork for future character developments

Cons - Grawp was a bit pants, the final scene between Harry and Dumbledore was much too brief and lacked any emotional punch

10:36 pm
Gah, some right evil bastards have leaked the new Harry Potter book onto the internet and now I'm completely on edge. John at work has tormented me by writing down the spoilers, sealing them in an envelope and telling me to keep it in my desk to a) see if I can resist temptation and b) see if they're accurate on Monday. The devilish man.

I know it's just a book and can't really explain to anyone not into the series why it's so damned important. It just IS. Especially after Dumbledore was pretty much ruined last time around (I was lucky enough to not hear a thing about OotP beforehand). Ah well, two more days and I'll have it in my eager little mitts. Friday night will be crap though, I feel obliged to go out for at least a few drinks after already saying I would for a friend's sister, but I really don't want to. I'm sure at some point a complete asshole is going to be shouting about the ending to all the kids waiting in line at the bookstore and I don't want to be anywhere near it. Gargh. I'm so sad / paranoid / obsessed.

3:39 am - Argh
Police can be tossers sometimes. I was just walking home after a night out and a cop car pulls up beside me and one of the guys gets out, not much older than me, and starts asking who I am. "David," I reply, "what's your name?" "What's your surname David?" and when they don't gove me an answer as to why they want to know, I tell them and also my date of birth when they ask for it. Turns out some guy matching my description smashed a window through but he was born in '82 so it wasn't me. They turned to leave but halfway to their car they turned around and said I shouldn't give so much attitude next time and they 'don't need a reason (I'm a police officer)' to ask for my details. Attitude? How is it rude to ask someone who they are when they ask for my name as I'm walkig quietly down the bloody street? Gits.

Was a good night out though. Thank God no one got a video of me dancing to Status Quo.

9:34 pm - Why are they called 'roadworks' when no buggers are actually working on them?
Snow Patrol are touring Australia whilst I'm there this September. Sweet, now I just need to wake up at 3am on Tuesday to make sure I get decent tickets :p

I've spent the last week binging on Lost as the series is over and I'd got them all on tape ready to watch. I absolutely refuse to watch them week by week, the amount cliffhangers and questions that just don't get resolved the next week would make me want to kill somebody if I did. Anyway, it was enjoyable and definitely better than the first six episodes back before Christmas. It's not a good sign that they plan on making three more sixteen episode seasons though, it's stretched to breaking point as it is and major plot points are just getting replaced and left unsolved with new ones. But I can't stop watching because I need answers!

This weekend should be fun because I'm heading into Brum to meet up with uni mates. It's crazy to realise that I finished my exams over a year ago now.

8:24 pm - Yippee
Queensland is now totally booked and confirmed. Anita and I fly out on the morning of Saturday 8th, spend most of the day in Cairns, then head out on the tour the next day.

Here's what we'll be doing: )

So the last day will be Thursday 13th. We fly back that evening and the nest day is her 21st birthday. Awesome.

Also awesome is that tomorrow I'm heading up to Mablethorpe (seaside town) for the bank holiday weekend with my mates. Ta ta till after then.

10:36 pm - ANNOUNCEMENT!
The stars and the moon have finally aligned to form a koala constellation in the sky once more, so to mark the occasion I've booked myself a flight to Australia, leaving 30th August and returning home 21st September. A trip to Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef also looks promising this time around.

9:18 pm - And I'm back
Holiday was top notch, it stayed between 25-30 the whole time which is perfect for me. We had an apartment owned by a friend of one of the guys I went with so it was in a residential block, but the entrance was right next door to all the bars, clubs and restaurants, so score one there.

We went to the waterpark on Thursday and that was a great laugh. Boomerang was seriously scary though, it was practically a vertical drop on the first side and we came within a foot of just flying off the other end O_O. Although we did get come back with an assortment of black eyes, blistered feet, sunburnt shoulders, cut up backs, bleeding ankles and various other cuts and bruises. Oh and I still have a cold from it. But twas all good fun.

Other than that the holiday was essentially hanging out by the pool / beach and drinking ourselves stupid for seven straight nights. Simply's was by far the best place we found, the house special being a pint of vodka and red bull. Igor, the boss, also owned the bar two spots down and took a shine to us because he cooked bar snacks especially for us a couple of times. And the reps were all awesome. We also managed to get almost everyone there going "Hey Bert!" by the time we left. We'd be ambling along in the afternoon and people we didn't even remember would shout it to us from across the street. Sweet :D

Some Australia toing and froing is also in the works for June and September, so hopefully even better times lie ahead.
